A chat with Ron Kibble…painter, photographer and himself as his subject.

PAINTING3As an artist where do you find inspiration for your work?

I work everyday so just about anything is fair game. Whether is a dream I had, or someone may say something that makes a image pop into my head or something on television. Most of my work comes from events from my past then mixed with whats happening around me now. I always have an image in my head waiting to get out.

Who are your influences creatively?

My life is my biggest influence. I can’t say that any one person or artist has had an influence on me. The philosophy of the Beat and Dadaism has had an impact on me. I like cave drawings and hieroglyphics because they were like the equivalent of graffiti of the time with a message. I’d also add that, I can’t say he has a direct influence on me now, but as a little boy I had a thing for Picasso.

ronphotoA lot of your pieces are very homoerotic driven on a darker but whimsical side. Is there a specific message you’re trying to convey with your work?

All my work has layers of meaning some of it deeply personal or hidden some obvious or superficial. In a way I whould explain alot of my work like meeting a stranger for the first time and as you get to know them you seen the layers of them. You may meet someone that’s a wise cracker but as you get to know them their is a dark side, a spiritual side and so on.

Would you say that your style of painting has a cool 80’s feel?

I can’t say that I see that but I have been told that and compaired to a famous 80’s painter. In the 80’s it was an “anything go’s” attitude and people where seaching for something new I think. So in that aspect maybe. I don’t put limitations on my art  and once a painting is done, I’m on to the next. If I am out of canvas I will grab an older painting and paint over it.

How would you describe your work?

A message in a bottle…lol.

PAINTING2Whats your preferred medium?

I do poetry, photography and some proformance art but my trur love is in my painting. I love the mark it leaves. I remember the first time I went to an art museum and I was standing in front of a Monet painting and more than just the image itself, I was drawn to the individual brush strokes. I work with acrylic paint decause it suits my temperament and ideologies.

How large is the biggest piece you’ve painted and how long did it take you from start to finish?

The largest painting I ever did on canvas was about 8 feet high and 16 wide. I worked on in off and on for about a week. I did a piece on an alley wall behind my the apartment I was living once that I would add to every day for about a year. I dont have any clue how big it was but by the time I moved to a new place it was huge. I would love to do a billboard size paintings.

There’s alot of “bone and wing” symbolism in your work. What is that reference?

Its heaven and earth, saint and sin…having the ability to fly but one wing has been scalpt by the enemy with in our self

PAINTINGS5Are you mass marketing yourself and your work and if so where could aperson find and purchase any of your creations?

I’m on twitter, tumbler, Instagram, Facebook and at ronkibble.com where you can find my original art work, poster’s and t shirts.

How much time do you spend on your photography? And which came first, painting or photography?

I spend between 8 and 16 hours on my work each day. I started with my poetry then painting then added photography then performance art

Your photographic images are a beautifully dark and haunting. Would you say that best describes who you are?

All my work is a reflection of who I am. I’m making art as a cathartic experience for me.

ronniephoto2Is your photography self portrait focused?

All my work has been self portrait focused even when my image is not in the image of me, it still represents who I am.

Some of your images bring to mind a bit of Robert Mapplethorp? What doyou think of his work?

I think he was a ground breaking photographer. Personally, I don’t see the visual connection to his work but I would be honoured to be seen in the same light as him.

You as the recurring photographic subject, Would you describe yourself as an exhibitionist?

Hahaha! I would consider my self as an exhibitionist but more of the soul than the flesh.

PAINTING4If somebody was interested in your work how could they get in touch with you?

Most people contact me through social media like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram but I can also be reached though email. serpentdown@gmail.com

Do you have upcoming exhibits you’d like to mention?

I have two incoming shows in Norway one at the end of April and another in June.16,
